The Parent and Grandparent Super Visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to come to Canada as visitors for a period of up to 5 consecutive years at their initial visit without having to renew their status. The visa itself can be valid for up to 10 years, offering a convenient, multi-entry pathway to stay connected with family in Canada.
Unlike a regular visitor visa (which only grants status for up to 6 months), the Super Visa allows for long-term visits, reducing the stress and hassle of regular reapplications.
When you arrive at the port of entry in Canada, a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer determines your length of stay. If you wish to extend your stay while in Canada, you must submit an application for extension.
Important Note: If you plan to extend your visitor or Super Visa status, you should apply at least 30 days before your current status expires. This keeps you in legal status (implied status) while IRCC processes your extension application. Parents and grandparents who originally came to Canada on a regular 6-month visitor visa can also apply to transition to/extend as a Super Visa holder from within Canada if they meet all the eligibility criteria.
